Burdenko Gamma Knife Center in Moscow
In treating brain disorders, the quest for precision and perfection must always be foremost. Leksell Gamma Knife® produced a revolution in intra-cranial surgery when the method was introduced. At that time it was considered as an experimental method.
Today it is the standard of care for neurosurgery, with thousands of published papers on treatment efficacy, improved quality of life for patients and enhanced efficiency, among other things. The method is unique and indispensable. The driving force behind Gamma Knife® surgery is the unsurpassed and proven clinical outcome. New experiences are shared at Leksell Gamma Knife® Society, a highly respected convention held every second year.
Gamma Knife® surgery, sometimes referred to as stereotactic radiosurgery, is a non-invasive method for treating brain disorders. It is the delivery of a single, high dose of irradiation to a small and critically located intra-cranial volume through the intact skull.
The extreme precision of Leksell Gamma Knife® makes it possible to administer a high radiation dose to the diseased area, minimizing the risk of damaging healthy tissue. Leksell Gamma Knife® is used for treatment of vascular malformations, benign tumors, metastases and other malignant tumors, as well as functional disorders.
Gamma Knife® surgery has many advantages. The risk of complications, as compared to open surgery, is less and it is a gentler form of treatment for the patient. Gamma Knife® surgery can normally be performed in a day, and the convalescence time is extremely short.
To date, some 300,000 patients around the world have undergone Gamma Knife® surgery and each year more than 35,000 patients receive this treatment. When available it is the patient's preferred choice. ( www.elekta.com )
